History of Paradise Seeds + Top 3 Strains

Rounding up the Amsterdam Seed Center History of Series, we pay tribute to one of the more elusive breeders of his generation, the founder of Paradise Seeds, Luc Krol. Each of the breeders in the series made their own way and walked their own path. Luc didn't need to travel to exotic places like some of his peers to start his journey into cannabis folklore. It began in his parents back garden in the Netherlands.

Over 25 years on, since that first seed, Luc's journey has taken in many countries and continents. Paradise Seeds has won numerous cannabis awards, has been heavily involved in some of the most exciting cannabis projects of the last two decades, and has a cannabis seed catalogue that contains over 40 strains.

Beginnings: squat days

You might struggle to believe that an award-winning cannabis breeder started breeding cannabis strains in a squat, but that is how Paradise Seeds began. At the time, Amsterdam was a lot more liberal than it is now, and squat culture was prevalent in the city, and many of Amsterdam youth had taken residence in some of the old and decaying buildings.

One thing that was the same as now was that Amsterdam was a hub for international travellers. With his squat located close to Amsterdam Central station, Luc exchanged cannabis seeds with world travellers and grew his cannabis seed library.

Breakthrough: Sensi Star

Despite being founded in 1994 with much enthusiasm, Paradise Seeds experienced 'slow burning' success with strains such as the extinguished 'Amsterdam Flame' and the ever-present 'Dutch Dragon. And it wasn't until the High Times Cup in 1999 when Sensi Star won 1st place in the Indica Cup. It was then everything changed, seemingly overnight. Luc went from being an eccentric local breeder to an internationally renowned High Times winner. The awards kept coming, but Luc shifted his focus.

Medical Cannabis: Daya Foundation and MCBT

After the High Times victory, Paradise Seeds won many competitions, but other challenges lay ahead for Luc and his genetics. A big proponent of further research into the benefits of using cannabis to treat illnesses. Luc donated his genetics to the Daya Foundation in Chile, the first legal growing facility for medical cannabis in Latin America. The work and progress of the Daya foundation are documented in the short film Green Medicine. Back home, Luc was the founder member of the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour - a yearly 420km bike ride to raise money for groundbreaking research into using cannabis to treat rare cancer.

Chongs Choice Seeds - Tommy Chong's Cannabis

As legalisation happened in certain US states, European breeders scrambled to strengthen their Stateside contact. Luc didn't have to go to America though he had a chance encounter with cannabis Tommy Chong legend at Mary Jane Expo in Berlin. From there, they formed a collaboration bringing the best of Californian genetics and the best of Paradise Seeds together under the banner of Chongs Choice Seeds. The exclusive Four strain collection is immensely popular, proving as much by winning 2nd place at the last Champions Cup at Spannabis. Chong's Choice has recently rebranded to Tommy Chong's Cannabis, but that collaboration goes from strength to strength.

There's not much point in talking about the artist and not showing you their art. Here are our Top three Paradise Seed strains.

  1. Sensi Star
    Sensi Star

    Starting at

Sensi Star

The strain that made Paradise famous overnight is 90% Indica, and ever since that famous High Times victory, Sensi Star has been one of the most sought after genetics. Not to overstate the importance of this strain, but Sensi Star was considered the heavyweight of all Indica's. If a breeder told you they didn't want a prime Sensi Star cut in their collection, they are either misinformed or lying.

    L.A. Amnesia - Chong's Choice

    Starting at

L.A. Amnesia

The perfect blend of the famous Dutch Amnesia and a Californian Kush and a fine example of one of the four incredibly tasty Tommy Chong Cannabis Strains brought to you in collaboration with Paradise Seeds. As mentioned above, Paradise Seeds had to make room in the trophy cabinet for 2nd place Sativa at the last Spannabis.

  1. Wappa
    Wappa

    Starting at

Wappa

Wappa is possibly the most uniform and robust cannabis strain in the Paradise Seeds catalogue. In addition, this award-winning Indica hybrid has superb taste with hints of strawberry, high THC content and yields huge. It should be no surprise that Wappa is popular with people who buy cannabis seeds online.
