Growing Cannabis Outdoors: 6 things to do in bad weather

It's raining. It's pouring. This summer is getting boring. If you're sat with your face pressed against the window and wishing the rain would stop, know that you're not alone. This summer has been one of the wettest on record for parts of northern Europe, and it's not only the terraces of Amsterdam and Paris that have been suffering. Outdoor growers are paying for heavy rainfall and a lack of sunlight.

If you've popped some seeds in your outdoor garden this year, you will have seen your plants taking a hit. Don't panic because there are things you can do to keep your plants healthy and get the most out of your harvest. Even if the rain keeps coming.

In this blog article, we'll explore some practical tips and solutions to help you navigate through challenging weather conditions and safeguard your precious plants.

1. Monitor Weather Forecasts:

Stay one step ahead by keeping a close eye on weather forecasts. Knowing when adverse weather is approaching can help you prepare and take preventive measures. Investing in a reliable weather app or station can provide you with real-time updates and insights into temperature drops, heavy rains, strong winds, or potential frost.

2. Adjust their water intake:

This one is simple. If your plants get exposed to more rain than usual, adjust the water you give them, as too much can waterlog your plants and lead to root rot. Nobody likes a soggy garden, nor do your plants. Even if they are covered or in a greenhouse, the humidity levels might rise, and dampness might affect how much water they need. Increased humidity and moisture cause dampness and put your plants at risk of attracting pests, developing mould and other diseases.

3. Pruning:

Well-timed pruning and providing support to your plants can prevent potential damage from strong winds or heavy rains. Trimming excess foliage and removing weak branches can minimize the risk of breakage. Additionally, installing stakes or trellises can offer much-needed support during storms, preventing your plants from bending or snapping.

4. Training:

One of the best things you can do to prevent harm to your outdoor cannabis plants is to train them as early as possible. Methods range from L.S.T (Low-stress training) and gently tying down branches to avoid overexposure to the elements. Or building a raised bed or box like you might see with potatoes and leeks, place a net over the top to restrict the height and encourage width. Dropping netting wouldn't protect your plants from rainfall but would take the venom out of the wind.

5. Create Protective Structures:

The best thing you can do to prevent damage to your crop or to save it from the elements is to provide them with a roof over their heads. Ideally, a greenhouse is the best way forward. They get designed to take as much light as the sunbeams and stop rain and wind from battering your plants. Maybe your plants are sowed directly in the ground, and you can't move them to a greenhouse. In that case, build a temporary shelter from a clear tarp and keep them from taking a beating, then remove it once the sun is shining.

6. Stay Patient and Observant:

Throughout challenging weather conditions, it's crucial to remain patient and observant. After the storm has passed, assess your plants for any signs of damage or stress. Look for wilting, yellowing leaves, or broken branches. Quick action, such as removing damaged parts or providing additional support, can aid in their recovery.

Conclusion: Take your time in challenging weather

Each cannabis strain may be different from the next. One might thrive in challenging conditions when another suffers. Growing cannabis in difficult weather requires patience, effort and a proactive mindset. Monitor your plants regularly, adapt your methods, and you should still be harvesting this year. Just maybe a little later than usual and somewhat less potent than you'd hoped.
