Germany Legalised: What you need to know.
It was no day for fools this April 1st, as Germany became the third European country to legalise the recreational use of our favourite plant. If you live and breathe that German air, you can carry almost an oz of the finest peng, leng, dank, green, buddha, fire or whatever you want to call it. You can own and smoke it and, in small amounts, grow it! Please don't do it near a school and a bunch of other public buildings, though, and all will be fine and dandy.

Legal Weed

The streets were alight with the sound of lighters as cannabis advocates sparked up joints in celebration as the new cannabis laws came into effect. But what does it mean for the average German stoner? And is it time to pack the suitcase to get blitzed in Berlin?

What's it all about Checkpoint Charlie?

The crux of the new law is that German residents can carry up to 25 grams for personal use and grow up to three plants. Whoop whoop! Better yet, later in the year, the law expands to include cannabis clubs. The clubs will function as non-profits (cost covered by membership fees) and have a maximum membership of 500. From July 1, members can access up to 25 grams a day or 50 grams per month. And if you're thinking the 50 grams a month limit will encourage people to access the black market. Don't worry! There are still the 3 plants at home you can grow, with no mention of how big they can yield. So, bombs away on that front. It's time for an extended veg and a SCROG.

Ah, yes, tourism. Well, in this case, it's a no to tourism. The Germans might have looked at their better-looking sibling in the Netherlands and thought against letting the world's stoners descend on its cities. The German cannabis scene will not cater to tourism and is solely aimed at improving weed for Germans and saving the police time and money. So posing for a selfie at Checkpoint Charlie while higher than a cold war soviet satellite is out of the question.

Crimes Against Cannabis

Not everyone is mellow about the change, though. The legislation calls for an amnesty of canna crimes that would no longer be illegal, and regional authorities are panicking because the local courts will be overwhelmed with past cases. However, we have some advice on that front. Make a nice pot of tea, roll a fat one, and free the weed.

Mary Jane Berlin 2024

If you're not German but want to check out the canna scene in Germany. There's no better place than Mary Jane Berlin. MJB is always a tremendous expo, and this year promises to be extra special thanks to these newly minted canna freedoms. With over 35,000 attendees, 35 speakers and over 330 exhibitors, the 14th - 16th of June is a 3-day weekend not to be missed.
